Palestinians React with Concern to Trump’s Victory, Leaders Call for Peace
Palestinians have expressed dismay at Donald Trump’s return to the U.S. presidency, fearing that his leadership might bring further challenges amid ongoing conflicts with Israel. Individuals like Abu Osama from Gaza describe Trump’s win as a “new catastrophe,” anticipating more political difficulties on top of the devastation and displacement caused by over a year of war. The conflict, which began in October 2023 following an attack by Hamas-led militants, has resulted in the deaths of over 43,300 Palestinians, with ongoing attempts by the U.S. and Arab mediators to arrange a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas remaining unsuccessful.
Palestinian leaders, including both Hamas and the Palestinian Authority, have voiced their calls for peace. Hamas officials urged Trump to reconsider the unwavering U.S. support for Israel, pointing out that he would be judged by his actions, not words. In the West Bank, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas expressed a willingness to work with the new administration to achieve regional peace, appealing for support of Palestinian aspirations. While some Palestinians remain skeptical of Trump’s intentions, others, like Gaza engineer Mohammed Barghouthi, hope Trump might fulfill his statement about ending the conflict quickly.
