Tigers Poised to Sign Free Agent Alex Bregman, Eyeing Position Switch for 2025 Playoff Push
After a surprise playoff run in 2024, the Detroit Tigers are setting their sights on a major roster boost with the potential signing of free agent Alex Bregman. CBS Sports' Mike Axisa reports that Bregman, a standout third baseman for the Houston Astros, is willing to switch positions — possibly to second base — to accommodate the Tigers’ young infield talents like Jace Jung and Colt Keith. This flexibility could make Bregman an ideal fit for Detroit’s lineup as the team prepares for another postseason push in 2025.
The challenge for Detroit lies in meeting Bregman’s projected market value, with estimates around $120 million over four years. Despite financial commitments to players like Javier Báez, whose tenure has not met expectations, the Tigers’ largely young, affordable roster may provide the financial room to secure Bregman’s veteran leadership and power at the plate. Detroit's manager, A.J. Hinch, who previously coached Bregman in Houston, may once again prove instrumental in creatively deploying his infield to optimize the lineup.
